In news that should delight AM 570’s Joe McDonnell, Brian Dohn of the Daily News is reporting that “the likely scenario” is that UCLA QB Patrick Cowan (left) might be forced to miss the ‘08 season because of torn ligaments in his knee.   Cowan’s status could still change once the swelling goes down… but given his injury history and the initial diagnosis, I’m willing to wager that he’ll end up needing a procedure to repair the damage.  The news is a little better for Ben Olson, who should be back in 6-8 weeks.  Dohn writes that Olson might need surgery to insert a screw, but whether it heals naturally via the knife, he should be back in plenty of time for fall practice.

That means Kevin Craft and Chris Forcier jump, at least temporarily, to the top of the Bruins’ depth chart under center, and will get most of the snaps in Saturday’s spring game.  Given the troubles they had there last year (brought on by injuries to Olson and Cowan), it’s pretty clear that Rick Neuheisel has some work to do there.
