Clippers Acquire Marcus Camby for Next to Nothing
By Eric Patten | Los Angeles Clippers
Nearly a week after Elton Brand jettisoned Los Angeles for a sparkling new deal in Philly, the Clippers have found a replacement. Former number two overall pick and 2007 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Camby was acquired from the Denver Nuggets for the option to swap out 2010 second round draft picks… and that’s it. Camby, who averaged just over nine points and 13 rebounds last year, not only fills the void left by Brand in the box score, but in the financial ledger. According to Fox Sports, the 6-foot, 11-inch forward has two years left on his deal worth nearly $23 million. ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the league approved the trade, paving the way for the 34-year-old Camby to join the Clippers Wednesday.
Ultimately, the team swapped Brand and high scoring forward Corey Maggette for point guard Baron Davis and, now, Camby. The Clippers are left with roughly $2-3 million to fill out the remaining roster slots.

Obviously, he’s no Brand. However, if Marcus can stay healthy, he and Kaman will make up a forbidable front-court for other teams to contend with when playing the Clips. And this gives the Clips lots of salary cap space in 2010 when the likes of Bosh, King James, Wade and Amare will hit the free-agent market. Overall, a nice job by Elgin Baylor to move on, salvage the 2008 off season and steer the Clippers into a new direction.
Nice job by Elgin? He makes trades for these guys?
I’m with you Dodger… At least you get the feeling that the Clips are trying, something that was not so easy to say a few years ago. The main worry I have with Camby is his durability. We’ll see if he turns out to be a decent holdover unitl 2010 as you alluded to.
Brian are you inferring that Elgin is just the GM in name these days?
Great deal for the Clips, much better then bringing in Randolf. Granted that Camby is not Brand but on the other hand we won’t be on the hook for the back end of Elton’s contract when he will be a huge liability. I love all the expiring contracts in 2010, who knows what that might bring if we can have success over the next two years.
The last time I felt so good about a trade was when we acquired Kerry Kittles for next to nothing and that sure worked out well.
