Reports out of San Diego indicate that Chargers’ linebacker Shawne Merriman will be placed on injured reserve, officially ending his season.

Merriman played with a torn LCL and PCL in his left knee on Sunday versus Carolina, and performed admirably well. During the game’s final drive, he recorded three hurries of quarterback Jake Delhomme on nine plays.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Merriman will undergo full reconstructive knee surgery and should be ready to play in 2009. The U-T also reported that the Chargers may attempt to sign Roosevelt Colvin, recently cut by the Texans.

The news of the Chargers’ decision to place Merriman on IR comes one day after the Patriots’ Tom Brady was shelved for the season with what the team is calling a “left knee injury.”

Good move. This team is young and there is no use jeopardizing his career.

    Mo-
I’m completely with you. The only surprise for me was that they didn’t do it sooner.
